Million Thai (SF)
Solo Lunch: 08.27.13 @ 1 pm
My face fell when I found myself staring at the closed “Golden Era Vegetarian Restaurant” in the TL. Then I went into a brief panic episode when I realized that I had no idea where I could get lunch before going back to work in less than an hour.
It was a good thing that I grabbed a paper menu at Million Thai just 2 blocks away from Golden Era.
Million Thai is small but nice and cozy. It was nearly empty at past 1 pm on a weekday.
The first thing I noticed was the prices were a little bit higher than I what usually pay for a Thai lunch plate in the TL. I ordered anyway. I had the:
Pad Kee Mao with Shrimp: Stir fried flat rice noodle and your choice of ground chicken, beef or pork with green bean, bell pepper, Thai chili and basil.
I was thankful that it was not sweet but a little greasy which was expected. Somehow I was missing the nice smokey taste of the wok. The noodles were al dente and not mushy.
I guess I was already disappointed at not being able to eat at Golden Era that I felt that my dish was unremarkable although there was nothing wrong with it.
Aside from not being thrilled at allowing myself to eat carbs (noodles), what got me upset was after I found out that I was offered a dinner menu for this noodle dish ( $12) where the on the lunch menu, it would have only been $7.75!!!!!
CHECK: $15 (with tip) for a not very satisfying lunch!
*insert angry grunting noises here*
I will definitely brave this scary part of the TL again just to be able to eat at Golden Era. (Union Square is just few blocks away from this area.) For my future cravings for authentic Thai food, I will not stray from my “tried and true” Lers Ros Thai on Larkin again!
