San Jalisco (SF)
Date Night: July 10, 2013 @ 5 PM
I could not stop craving San Jalisco’s pork chile verde after my best gal Edelmira treated me here for lunch. This could have been my opportunity to cross off chilaquiles veronica which is #62 on SF Big Eats 2013: 100 Things to Try Before you Die.
I really enjoyed my meal at San Jalisco that I had to drag my guy two weeks later to share this authentic Mexican cuisine with him. The colorful and fun traditional decor of papel picado banners and Mexican artwork were suitable enough for a laid-back date night.
I am such a creature of habit– I got the chile verde again while my guy ordered a plate of chile rellenos. Both plates came with choice of beans (black or refried), salad, rice and piping hot tortillas.
Just like most Mexican restaurants a complimentary dish of tortilla chips and salsa were placed in front of us. The red salsa was nice, smoky and spicy. We ordered an extra appetizer of chips and guacamole. The guacamole was made with fresh buttery avocados. I was very fresh and tasty but make this often enough at home.
My guy and I both loved our dishes but we agreed that somebody that day went a little bit happy with the salt shaker. My chile verde was a tad salty but still very good. The sauce was slightly thick and very flavorful with tomatillos. The pork was toothsome and not overly tender.
I also ordered sangria which was served in a humongous glass. It was refreshing but unremarkable.
Before we left we could not resist and ordered menudo and flan to go. Menudo is only served in Bay Area Mexican restaurants on Saturday and Sunday, sometimes Monday. It is considered a “Mexican hangover food” and is very different from the Filipino menudo. We love it but we usually avoid it! Very unhealthy! I ate a little bit of the menudo the next day and it was very good. The broth was very flavorful while the meat (intestine, beef stomach, tripe, etc) was very tender.
I had to try the flan which tasted exactly like the Filipino leche flan.
Overall a nice and delicious dinner. Portions are generous and most dishes are about $10 each or less. Next time I will try the chilaquiles veronica (after I get over my carb phobia!)
